CRIMINAL INCIDENT - EMPLOYEES

An employee finding themselves in the midst of a robbery or any form of criminal activity they may cause harm to their physical well-being, must stay calm and do the following:

ARMED ROBBERY / HOSTAGE SITUATION

  1. Inform the caller that you are an employee and that you will transfer him to a person who deals with emergency situations.
  2. Ensure the caller is satisfied that you transfer him/her prior to you actually doing the transfer. Many callers wants to speak to the person who first answered the phone and do not wish to be transferred to another recipient.
  3. If the caller is satisfied, ransfer the call to your Emergency Controller, Emergency Co-ordinator or Fire Team Leader.
  4. Make sure the call is answered by the person you transferred to. Do not drop the line if the call is not answered.
  5. If the person you transferred to did not answer, you will have to stay on the line and handle the situation.

BREAK IN / THEFT

  1. Use the Bomb Threat Qustionaire to obtain all the required information about the person making a Bomb Threat.
  2. Stay calm and do not panic. The person making the bomb threat might become adjutated and frustrated by a person who starts to panic.
  3. Try to calm the person making a bomb threat. Remember, if the call is authentic, this person is just as afraid as you are.
  4. Do not become angry at the person making the threat, irrespective of his words or actions.
  5. Try to attract the attention of a colleague or if possible, a member of the emergency organization of your company. Write the words "BOMB THREAT" on a piece of paper if possible to describe what is going on.
  6. Obey all instructions from the person making the bomb threat.
  7. If the threat is via phone, constantly be aware of any back ground sunds and noises. Persons laughing in the background could indicate that it is a prank call.
  8. ALWAYS treat the bomb threat call as authentic until proven otherwise. Most bomb threat calls are usually prank calls, but one could never be certain until it is validated.

DISCOVERING A CRIME SCENE AFTER THE FACT

  1. When you hear of a Bomb Threat call, stay calm and do not panic.
  2. Follow the evacuation instructions of the Emergency Co-ordinator. Do NOT evacuate at random as this might be contradictory to the instructions from the person making the threat.
  3. Do not run out of the building and cause a panic. This might adjutate the person making the bomb threat and could move him/her into action.
  4. Do NOT make calls to other persons outside your workplace informing them of the bomb threat. This might attrack the attention of the media and force the person making the threat into action.
