PURPOSETo establish a structured procedure for the appointment, training, and responsibilities of Basic First Aiders to ensure:<ul><li>Immediate and effective response to injuries and medical emergencies </li><li>Protection of employees, contractors, and visitors </li><li>Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 </li><li>Proper use and management of first aid resources </li></ul> 2. SCOPEThis procedure applies to:<ul><li>All appointed First Aiders </li><li>All departments within SPAR Health </li><li>All operational areas and facilities </li></ul>It covers:<ul><li>First aid response </li><li>Emergency procedures </li><li>First aid equipment management </li><li>Incident reporting </li></ul> 3. LEGAL COMPLIANCEThis SOP complies with:<ul><li>Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 </li><li>General Safety Regulations (Regulation 3 – First Aid) </li><li>Relevant SANS standards </li></ul> 4. APPOINTMENT OF FIRST AIDERS<ul><li>First Aiders must be formally appointed in writing </li><li>Minimum requirement: <ul><li>1 First Aider per 50 employees (or part thereof) </li></ul></li><li>First Aiders must: <ul><li>Be physically and mentally capable </li><li>Be available during working hours/shifts </li><li>Hold valid, accredited first aid training </li></ul></li></ul> 5. TRAINING REQUIREMENTSAll First Aiders must be trained in:<ul><li>Basic First Aid (Level 1 or equivalent) </li><li>CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) </li><li>Treatment of common injuries: <ul><li>Cuts and bleeding </li><li>Burns  </li><li>Fractures  </li><li>Shock  </li></ul></li></ul>Training must:<ul><li>Be provided by an accredited training provider </li><li>Be valid and renewed as required (typically every 2–3 years) </li></ul> 6. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIESFirst Aiders are responsible for:<ul><li>Providing immediate first aid treatment </li><li>Assessing injured persons </li><li>Stabilising patients until further medical help arrives </li><li>Calling emergency services when required </li><li>Maintaining calm and control during emergencies </li><li>Reporting all incidents </li></ul> 7. FIRST AID RESPONSE PROCEDUREIn case of injury or medical emergency:<ol><li>Ensure the scene is safe </li><li>Assess the patient (conscious/unconscious, breathing, bleeding) </li><li>Call for assistance if needed </li><li>Provide appropriate first aid </li><li>Call emergency services if required </li><li>Do not move injured person unless necessary </li><li>Stay with patient until help arrives </li><li>Record the incident </li></ol> 8. FIRST AID EQUIPMENT<ul><li>First aid boxes must: <ul><li>Be easily accessible </li><li>Be clearly marked </li><li>Contain required items as per regulations </li></ul></li><li>First Aiders must: <ul><li>Check kits regularly </li><li>Report missing or expired items </li><li>Ensure kits are restocked </li></ul></li></ul> 9. FIRST AID BOX CONTROL<ul><li>First aid boxes must be: <ul><li>Located in strategic areas </li><li>Inspected monthly </li></ul></li><li>Inspection must be completed by scanning QR codes and submitting on Shefes</li></ul> 10. INCIDENT REPORTING<ul><li>All incidents must be reported immediately </li><li>First Aiders must: <ul><li>Complete incident reports (Contact Dean Jacobs for help on Shefes for incident report)</li><li>Record treatment provided </li><li>Submit reports on Shefes</li></ul></li></ul> 11. COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL<ul><li>First Aiders must communicate with: <ul><li>Maintenance Manager / Safety Officer </li><li>Emergency services </li><li>Supervisors  </li></ul></li><li>Serious incidents must be escalated immediately </li></ul> 12. LIMITATIONS OF FIRST AIDERSFirst Aiders must:<ul><li>Only provide treatment within their level of training </li><li>Not administer medication unless authorised </li><li>Not perform advanced medical procedures </li><li>Always prioritise personal safety </li></ul> 13. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS<ul><li>First Aiders must: <ul><li>Participate in emergency drills </li><li>Be familiar with evacuation procedures </li><li>Know emergency contact numbers </li></ul></li></ul> 14. RECORD KEEPINGThe following must be maintained:<ul><li>Appointment letters </li><li>Training certificates </li><li>First aid treatment records </li><li>First aid box inspection records </li><li>Incident reports </li></ul> 15. REVIEW AND REVISIONThis SOP must be reviewed:<ul><li>Annually  </li><li>After incidents </li><li>After legal or operational changes</li></ul>
